Unhealthy Holiday Foods You Should Avoid

16216510942_76be383bbe_zThe holiday season is a time for spending time with family and eating traditional food. While the holidays are a great time for bonding while eating, you should take care to ensure that your holiday celebrations don’t sabotage your diet. This doesn’t mean you have to abstain from enjoying delicious holiday meals.

Avoid Unhealthy Holiday Foods

Holiday eating does not have to wreck your diet. Making healthy choices and eating in moderation can help you to keep your healthy lifestyle throughout the holiday season. The key is moderation and choosing holiday foods wisely. To make your decisions easier, the fertility experts at New Hope Fertility Center have compiled a list of the top  holiday foods to avoid.

Eggnog

Eggnog is full of calories, with just eight ounces containing close to 350 calories. That can quickly dispel the belief that drinking something sweet is better than indulging in dessert. Eggnog is a fat heavy product that is also high in cholesterol.

Creamed Spinach

Unfortunately, eating creamed spinach does more than just increase your vegetables for the day. Creamed spinach is also made with heavy cream and butter which increases the fat content from virtually nothing to 20 grams.

Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is a staple on many holiday tables. While cranberry sauce can be deceivingly healthy because it is a fruit, it is heavy in sugar. A half cup of cranberry sauce has more sugar than a piece of pumpkin pie.

Carmel Popcorn

Carmel popcorn is a holiday favorite for many families. The sweet snack provides nostalgia and is easily portable from household to household. The calories in caramel corn can quickly add up. As little as four ounces of this snack has nearly 500 calories, the equivalent of two full sized candy bars.

Candied Yams

On their own, yams are a great food for overall health and fertility. Most holiday recipes for candied yams add in a great deal of sugar and butter. Instead, go for sweet potato casserole which is substantially lower in sugar and fat.
