It is common knowledge that a man should avoid heat around his testicles while trying to conceive. Ideally, a man’s testicles should be kept several degrees cooler than the rest of his body. This is because the testicles need to be at a slightly lower temperature than the rest of the body to be at optimal reproductive performance. Being overheated can impact sperm production and make it more difficult for a man to impregnate a woman. Cold weather can actually increase a man’s sperm count and enhance your chances of conception.
Researchers have looked into this very issue. By evaluating more than six thousand semen samples, researchers were able to find that there is a general decline in the amount of sperm a man produces during warm weather. A man’s sperm count decline reverses in the winter months. Seasonal changes in temperature does impact sperm production. This is the same results found in the animal kingdom.
Often, there is an increase in the number of children born during the fall when compared to other seasons. This may be because of higher sperm production during the winter months. However, this has not been clinically proven. Other considerations are the improvement in sperm quality and the chance that couples have more intercourse during the winter months.
These findings do not mean that couples should focus all of their attention on conceiving during the winter months. However, for those who are trying to conceive, it can be good news that cold weather may actually enhance a man’s fertility.
